The Alexander Technique is a method of re-education. The technique works on the person as a whole, returning balance to the body and the mind.
F. M. Alexander discovered that there is a natural organic relationship between head-neck-back. Once this relationship is in a good poise and balance, the whole of our neuromuscular system is organized in a way that we can deal with gravity using the minimum amount of muscular tension. Through the years this poise becomes interfered with by our habits of use. We build up a way of dealing with all our activities, that because it's habitual to us , we take it as 'normal', and we feel it right because it is the only way we know and always do. The AT teaches us how we can use ourselves in a more conscious, connected and healthy way, making use of natural reflex support mechanisms rather than habitual patterns of tension. With the AT you review the way that you react from a stimulus, so you start to create a frame of space and time to choose in any moment what you want, instead of reacting in an unconscious way. The technique is a tool to recover our natural poise and coordination, bringing the attention to the process instead of the result. It is not about what to do, but how you do it.
The AT gives you the possibility of transforming and developing your state of being and coming back to your centre, to your essence.
I think that the AT is a practice to be more truly yourself.
